Photographing Ranch Scenes
By: Author: J Bakken

Ranch scenes are very popular to photograph. The key to capturing their beauty is being at the right place at the right time. Sometimes catching that horse as it rears up onto only one hind leg is a once in a lifetime opportunity that happens in a blink of an eye. Ranches are a part of our prairie and foothills landscape and they are a part of our heritage so to capture their stories in a photograph is a treasure.
Ranch scene photography can include barns, fences, various tack, horses, and of course, cowboys and cowgirls. The colours in ranch scene photography can range from the colours of an old barn at sunrise or sunset or the variety one can achieve by photographing ranches in the different seasons. Capturing horses in a field in the autumn can reap some brilliant gold and orange colours, while snapping photographs of them in the winter can be a brilliant contrast of the colours of the horses and the white snow. Whatever the season or time of day, they all hold their own beauty.
Ranch scene photographs that focus on the animals are popular among nature horse enthusiasts. Catching a horse bending down with its nose near a flower or capturing a young foal just learning to stand can be award winning photographs.
Ranch scene photography can include focusing in on the tack and attire used by ranchers or cowboys. Photos can feature lassos, spurs, cowboy hats, saddles, and much more. Ranch scene photography on the prairies and foothills often feature ripe fields or horses in the distance, or even other man made structures such as old wagons and fences.
Ranch scene photography endeavours to capture a lifestyle and it is an enjoyable past-time that captures the beauty of nature and the joy of ranching and no two horses, barns, or cowboys, are exactly alike which adds to the uniqueness of each and every ranch scene photograph.
