Photographing Barns
By: Author: J Bakken
Old barns are a popular man made wonder to photograph. The key to capturing
their beauty is being at the right place at the right time. They are
disappearing from our prairie landscape and they are a part of our heritage
so to capture their stories in a photograph is a treasure.
Barn photographs can include the barns themselves, old homestead homes, and
old grainaries. The colours in barn pictures can range from the colours of
an old building at sunrise or sunset or the variety one can achieve by
photographing them in the different seasons. Capturing old barns in the
autumn can reap some brilliant gold and orange colours, while snapping
photographs of them in the winter can be a brilliant contrast of gray and
white. Whatever the season or time of day, they all hold their own beauty.
Barn photographs can also include animals and they are popular among nature
or heritage enthusiasts. Catching a lone coyote in front of an old barn can
be an award winning photograph with his silhouette showing up in the
foreground with the sun setting in the background.
Barn photography can include trees, flowers, fields, and much more. Barn
photography on the prairies often features ripe fields or a deer in the
distance, or even other man made structures such as old wagons beside them
with flowers or thistles growing alongside.
Barn photography is an enjoyable past-time that captures the beauty of
nature and the history of farming and no two barns are exactly alike which
adds to their uniqueness.
