Peggy's Cove
By: Author: J Bakken
On our first day in Nova Scotia in July, 2005, we stopped at Peggy's Cove
and it quickly became one of my favourite spots in the Maritimes! The sight
of the sapphire sea meeting the azure sky just off the rocky shore where the
lone lighthouse stands as a beacon to a small fishing community was truly
spectacular.
Listening to the waves crash along the rocky shoreline was mesmerizing as I
sat there soaking in the sunshine of that summer day. I watched others
explore the rocks and sea around the famous beacon. Youngsters ran up and
down the rocks not waiting for their elders to catch up to them. A very fit
71 year old and his 25 year old grandson also explored the nooks and
crannies of the rocks, the grandson barely keeping up to his grandpa. I too,
joined in their exploration.
Then, many of us went inside the lighthouse and mailed our postcards from
within it's walls...a unique experience...to have a post office within a
lighthouse. We talked about the history of the lighthouse and then turned
our discussion to the tiny community itself. Back from the lighthouse were
perhaps no more than 80 houses scattered along the rocky coast. Beside them
were fishing boats, indicative of the livelihood of those who lived there.
Peggy's Cove was truly a magnificent sight on the shores of the Atlantic
Ocean in friendly Nova Scotia.
