Landscape Photography
By: Author Jennifer Bakken
Landscape photography can include both natural and man-made wonders. The beauty of natural scenery can include pussy willows in spring, wild roses in summer, golden wheat fields in autumn, and snow-covered mountains in winter. The varying landscape makes our provinces very desirable for photographers. White and yellow daisies with the blue sky and the mountains as a backdrop are a photographer’s dream. An old leaning barn with a wagon can also give a western flavour to landscape photography potential. The possibilities are endless.
Wildflowers are another favourite among landscape photographers. The brilliant hues and incredible assortment make for amazing photographs. Canada is also home to incredible rivers and lakes, which, with the right camera, can yield amazing results in the field of landscape photography. While we’re talking about the water, we may as well include waterfalls in this category. Go on a hike anywhere in the Rockies and you’ll find great opportunities for captivating photos of waterfalls. Summer is a great time to capture the power of the falls and winter is an opportune time to capture unique frozen waterfalls. These make great additions to your landscape collection.
Landscape photography can include the numerous lakes and all the recreation they bring. A fisherman on a lake at sunset is a captivating sight. Children playing in the sand at a beach capture the spirit of summer. Canada geese on a northern lake make for great landscape photographs. Don’t even get me started on all the potential in our national parks.
Other popular landscape images include the abundant wildlife. Mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, and moose are among the most popular animals to be photographed in the province. Other animals include coyotes, wolves, and bears. Many calendars feature these animals as numerous landscape photographers go hunting for these animals armed only with their cameras.
The ranch lifestyle can be captured and included in the category of landscape photography. A day at a ranch can yield remarkable photographs of cowboys, horses, and fence posts with lassos on them. Baby animals born on the farm or ranch in spring are very popular for calendars and magazines. There is nothing cuter than baby chicks, ducks, pigs, calves, and colts.
Landscape photography is growing fast and it has unlimited potential. So, get in your car, grab your camera, and take a picture of the beauty that the our landscape boasts.
